How to tell if my brickwork needs repairing?

Damage caused by foundation movement will cause the brickwork to move and flex. Many older brick buildings constructed in Adelaide do not have movement expansion joints built into them and this can cause the brickwork to get damaged by the movement. Brickwork that has suffered movement can be identified first by visible cracking to the mortar joints between the brickwork. If the movement of the building worsens the cracks in the mortar joints will begin to open up, and in some situations cracks can be formed in the surrounding brickwork.

When is brick repointing required?

Repointing is a method of repairing cracked mortar joints to damaged brickwork.  This is required whenever cracks have been identified in a brick wall. The severity of cracked brickwork can be from minor to extreme, so it is always recommended if you identify cracks in your brickwork you request a site inspection from a professional who can offer you trustworthy advice on the required repairs.

Is brick repointing just for aesthetics?

Typically with minor cracking the home remains structurally stable, typically caused by seasonal movement of the foundation soils and repointing is predominantly for aesthetic purposes. Brickwork repointing can certainly visually enhance your home, the use of colour matched mortar and some expert care and effort your cracked home can be brought back to its former glory. In some cases where the cracking is extreme the repointing is required for structural reasons, as well as aesthetics. Where large cracks are visible in brickwork it is possibly due to factors outside of seasonal movement, like poor stormwater management or a leaking pipe underground. For these reasons it is important where large cracks are identified you have a professional who can visit the home and inspect the damage to provide trustworthy advice on the reasons the damage has occurred and what repair methods are possible. In some cases underpinning of the home may be required as part of the rectification.

What types of bricks can you replace?

All bricks can be removed and replaced, however as our homes get older the matching brickwork is becoming harder and harder to source.  Where your brick wall is painted or rendered this is less of a problem as a new brick can be used and covered with the finished surface.  If your brick is available it can be replaced.

What if our bricks aren’t made anymore?

While it is becoming more and more difficult to find discontinued stock, at TradeCo, with the assistance of our network of preferred contractors we are experts in being able source and locate older bricks to match your home. Some particular bricks which have been discontinued for a long time such as the irregular shaped “Modular” brick are becoming more and more difficult to source, however if they exist, it’s possible we will find them!

Can you fix a broken brick or is it better to replace it?

Wherever possible TradeCo will attempt to replace any broken bricks identified within a treatment area. While we cannot fix a broken brick, if finding a replacement is not possible it is possible we can aesthetically treat the cracks and breaks in bricks to not be as visible.
